News: Toronto Veg Association – Why I’m Veg Campaign

4 Jun

Hey guys – check this! The Toronto Veg Association has come up with a clever campaign called “Why I’m Veg Week”.

The Toronto Vegetarian Association – Founded in 1945, the Toronto Vegetarian Association (TVA) is Toronto’s go-to resource for all things veg. A grassroots charitable organization supported by more than 1400 donors and volunteers, the TVA coordinates North America’s largest annual vegetarian food festival each September

The “Why I’m Veg”  campaign will feature videos from notable veg/an people in the city. I’m pretty stoked about this. I am curious what people are going to say. I highly suggest you check this out and why not make your own video? Who knows who it will reach and the impact of your message. It’s surprising what a little encouragement, done in a non-judgemental positive manner, will do.

Here’s the press release I received from the TVA with further details:

Toronto Vegetarian Association launches Why I’m Veg Week on June 2 with videos by Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, NHLer Georges Laraque, and Toronto Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker

TORONTO: As veg diets continue to grow more popular, the Toronto Vegetarian Association marks the beginning of Why I’m Veg Week (June 2-9) with the release of testimonials on YouTube by notable vegetarians and vegans from Toronto & beyond.

“My choice to be vegan is a reflection of my commitment to the environment, animal rights and optimal health,” explains retired NHL enforcer Georges Laraque. “Plant-based diets are spreading in popularity as people begin to understand the many benefits of cutting out meat and other animal products from their diet.”

Video testimonials feature public figures including Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, Toronto Councillor Glenn De Baeremaker, Member of Parliament Hoang Mai (Brossard-La Prairie), broadcaster Jeff Marek of Sportsnet, and comedian Myq Kaplan. Nutrition and culinary specialists like chef Doug McNish, cookbook author jae steele, and dietitian Beverley Edwards-Miller are also featured. The videos will be posted next week at

In addition to drawing attention to the positive environmental and health benefits of cutting out animal products, the videos show that choosing vegetarian foods is healthy, easy and delicious. Other videos focused on the lives of animals on North American factory farms, the source of more than 90% of animal products available in Canada.

Why I’m Veg Week also highlights events including the Toronto Veggie Pride Parade (June 2), the Niagara Veg Fest (June 2), and the Toronto Raw/Vegan Festival (June 9-10).

“It’s easier than ever before to find healthy plant-based foods in the GTA,” says David Alexander, Executive Director of the Toronto Vegetarian Association. “Anyone familiar with Toronto’s 80-plus vegetarian restaurants will tell you that we eat well and we eat often!”
